Welcome to East Harlem / El Barrio Community Land Trust!

At EHEBCLT, we build lasting community power by securing land and housing under the control of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities. Our mission is rooted in equity, self-determination, and permanent affordability.

Founded in 2014 as a pilot project of the NYC Community Land Initiative (NYCCLI), and powered by the grassroots advocacy of Picture the Homeless members, EHEBCLT emerged from community organizing and a vision for collective ownership.

In November 2020, we made history by acquiring our first four buildings from the City of New York for just $1 each—becoming the first new community land trust in the city to gain ownership of public land. This milestone marks a powerful shift toward community stewardship in East Harlem.

What Is a Community Land Trust?

A Community Land Trust is a nonprofit, community-based organization that acquires and holds land in trust for the benefit of the community—permanently removing it from the speculative real estate market. It provides long-term, stable housing and often includes commercial, green, or cultural spaces designed to serve local needs.

Key Features of a CLT:

  • Permanent Affordability: CLTs ensure that housing and commercial spaces remain affordable forever, not just for the first generation of residents.

  • Community Control: Land is owned collectively and governed democratically by residents, community members, and public stakeholders.

  • Mutual Housing or Resident Governance: Tenants are active participants in shaping rules, operations, and development of the property.

  • Anti-Displacement Tool: CLTs combat gentrification by keeping land in community hands.
